How to connect to Remote Desktop in Windows

29 September, 2023

Most editions of the specified operating system include RDP by default. To use it on MacOS, you should download the official version from [App Store]. The Linux operating system offers many clients for the user to choose from. Connecting to a remote desktop in Windows occurs in a few steps:

  • Click “Start”, begin typing the words “remote” or “remote desktop”. A search bar will appear on the screen, where the system finds the required program and offers to open it.
  • The second option is to launch the application using the Win+R combination or by entering the command mstsc.
  • Enter the server's IP address in the “Computer” field and click “Connect”
  • Specify the username and password.
  • Correctly following the steps will ensure login: the appearance of the remote server screen will indicate this.

Public access to the remote desktop port may be denied by default. The user needs to add their IP to the server's firewall whitelist. More details about this can be found [in the instructions].

It is not recommended to make the remote desktop port open for public access to avoid attacks from malicious bots that attempt to guess the RDP password. For this purpose, it is necessary to monitor the list of IP addresses in the firewall that connect to the server. Setting a strong password reduces the chance of breaking into the remote desktop. However, legitimate users may experience login issues due to bots blocking free RDP sessions.
