Windows Server Standard license for dedicated server: purchasing features

29 September, 2023

Ordering a dedicated server with Windows involves installing a trial version of Windows Server Standard for familiarization. It is available for use for 180 days.

Timely payment of the license  ensures the ability to use the full version of the operating system. Otherwise, upon the expiration of the trial period, the server will be deactivated until the client purchases a licensed OS.

VPS-UP — an official Microsoft SPLA partner in Ukraine. Thanks to our partnership, we are authorized to license dedicated servers for clients with the Windows Server operating system.

Those who have purchased a Windows Server Standard license from another partner officially cooperating with Microsoft can use it without any issues, provided they supply truthful information regarding the purchase.

How to Order a Windows Server License

To order a licensed version of the OS, you need to log into the server management panel and follow these steps:

  1. Find the required server.
  2. Click on the [Main Information] tab.
  3. Locate the [Configuration and Settings] block displaying current licensing status.
  4. Click [Order License] in the selected block.

Calculating Licensing Costs

To calculate how much it costs to extend the official use of the server, you need to know the number of physical cores of the processor installed on the server. Licensing packs are purchased according to this number. The total cost of the server includes the licensing price. One pack priced at $7.85 is designed for two physical processor cores.

According to Microsoft’s licensing policy, a minimum of four licensing packs must be ordered, considering servers that use processors with up to eight physical cores. If there are exactly 8 or more, the usual approach mentioned above applies for calculation.

For example, if the server has an Intel Core i9-9900K installed — a processor with 8 physical cores. To license the software, it is sufficient to purchase 4 packs for a total of $31.4.

Note! Servers with a trial version of Windows may spontaneously crash or shut down, leading to instability. The trial version is intended for familiarization with Windows, not for full operation. The latter becomes available after licensing. This behavior is marked by code 41, which is recorded in the event log.

Purchasing a license requires providing information about the Tax Identification Number (TIN) if the customer is an individual, or the Unified State Register of Enterprises and Organizations of Ukraine (EDRPOU) in the case of purchasing software by a legal entity. This data is transmitted to Microsoft.

Note! Once you order a license, it becomes tied to the server and cannot be canceled. In this case, the refusal of licensing is initiated simultaneously with the refusal of the server.

Note! As the end of the trial period approaches, the user receives a letter from the automated notification system, allowing them to purchase a license in time.
